The Student Assistance Program of Goals of the Program Many students are troubled by problems that not only interfere with their educational performance, but with their physical, mental, social, and emotional development. These problems may include drugs/alcohol, family problems, peer pressure, thought of suicide or many others. Help is available through the Student Assistance Program. The Student Assistance Program is designed to identify and refer students who display at-risk behaviors. It is not a drug treatment program or a discipline program. The program's purpose is to intervene with at-risk students by directing them to the appropriate counseling/treatment or support programs. These programs may be school or community based. The program has been established to assist students who have problems that are affecting school performance. Referrals Students become involved in the program through written referral or violation of the school's substance abuse policy. Any parent, teacher, staff member, student or concerned person may refer a student by calling a team member or filling out a referral form. Referral forms are available outside the guidance office and must be signed when submitted. Parental permission is obtained before team members meet with the student. Team Members are a group of concerned staff members who have received training in identification of at-risk behaviors among adolescents. Program Functions:
