Athletic Policy

The interscholastic athletic program at United High School is an integral part of the total school educational program. Its purpose is to encourage participation by both boys and girls and to compete on an even basis with other schools. This is never done at the sacrifice of sportsmanship, academic priority or the general welfare of the school and our students.

United High School is an active member of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association and the Appalachian Athletic Conference. United offers participation in ten varsity teams and eight junior high level teams. Current varsity sports that are open to both boys and girls include track, basketball and golf. Other sports include football, softball, baseball, wrestling and volleyball. Some of the junior high teams are football, wrestling, volleyball, and basketball.

Season Policies

Attendance :  A student who has been absent from school during a semester for a total of twenty (20) or more school days shall not be eligible to participate in any athletic contest until he/she has been in attendance for a total of sixty (60) school days following his/her twentieth (20) day of absence, except that where there is a consecutive absence of five (5) or more school days due to confining injury or death in the immediate family.  An athlete must be in school by 9:30 a.m. or have a doctor's excuse or pre-approved excuse to participate in athletic events for that day (emergency situations will be considered by the high school building principal or athletic director).

Absences on Day of Game :  A student shall not participate in athletics on the day he/she has been absent from any class without just reasons and/or prior approval as determined by the Building Principal.  If a student is too ill to attend class, he/she is too ill to participate in athletics.  Permission to participate under special circumstances may be granted by the Principal.

Drugs, Alcohol and Tobacco :  A student shall not use, not have in his/her possession, tobacco, alcohol or illegal drugs.  Violation shall result in immediate suspension from the sport and referral to the principal.

Scholarship :  A student must pass at least 4 credits during a previous grading period, or he/she is ineligible for the first 4 weeks of the new grading period.  The students must also be passing at least 4 credits weekly.  Weekly eligibility is cumulative from the beginning of the grading period.

Discipline :  The school administration reserves the right to revoke the privilege of participation at any time for disciplinary reasons.  Flagrant misconduct, poor sportsmanship, excessive absenteeism, or failure to meet scholastic standards are some examples.
