Jr. High Environmental Club

Advisor:  Ms. Judy Shomo

Membership:  Membership is open to students in 7th and 8th grades, but due to the amount of work involved with recycling and other activities this club participates in, members are required to sign a pledge letter along with a parent's signature.  Therefore, if a member does not meet the responsibilities addressed on the pledge letter he or she can be dismissed from the club.

Purpose:  Main purpose is to promote the environment which we do mostly through our recycling program that hopefully helps to save so many trees annually.  Our club places collecting bins in about 25 different rooms throughout the building.  Then every other morning members go around and collect the paper from these bins.  Now the real work begins, all the staples must be removed plus all the paper must be separated into different categories before it will be accepted at the recycling center.  Last year we recycle close to 2 ton of paper.  As a club we also collect and recycle the soda cans that are disposed of by the students.  In the springtime we work in conjunction with the Indiana Co. Forester to improve the wildlife habitat up on Dishong Mountain.  Also we work with officials from Yellow Creek State Park and the Laurel Highland Trail to help them maintain a sound environment for their many visitors.  One other important activity we have done yearly is to try to get the elementary students aware of the environment so we hold a coloring contest in which the winners receive environmental t-shirts.  Always looking for new ideas.

National Honor Society

Advisor:  Mrs. Jody Conrad

Membership:  Membership in the National Honor Society is based on excellence in four areas:  Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character.  Each category is judged independently.  To be eligible for membership, the candidate must be a member of the eleventh or twelfth grade and have attended United for at least one semester.  A student must have a cumulative scholastic average of at least 95% in all subjects, beginning with ninth grade.  No student is inducted simply because of high academic average.  It is more important for a student to excel in areas of leadership, to demonstrate service to the school and community, and to demonstrate positive character traits.  Membership is not guaranteed to anyone.  The final decision for membership is made by the faculty council.  After students become members of the Honor Society, they are reviewed periodically by the faculty and must maintain the high standards of the Society.  Active members in the Honor Society are required to maintain a minimum 90% scholastic average and live up to the character, leadership, and service ideals of the National Honor Society.

Purpose:  The purpose of this organization shall be to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in the students of secondary schools.
