United School District

Letter to Parents

April 21, 2020

Dear United Parents/Guardians and Students:

Governor Tom Wolf has closed our schools for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year, as a way of mitigating the spread of COVID-19.  As a result, Secretary of Education, Pedro Rivera, has notified school districts within the commonwealth that his expectation is that all schools offer Planned Instruction.

United had been delivering education through Enrichment and Review as our way of offering Continuity of Education.  This process allowed us to continue enhancing and reviewing already learned material to our students.

Now that we are expected to deliver instruction through Planned Instruction, students will be assessed on new material from this point forward through the end of the academic year, June 4, 2020.  Teachers will continue presenting materials as they have been doing, however, the material now will be graded.

Teachers at the Elementary School will be using a Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory rating scale for the 4th marking period; and, Teachers at the High School will be using a Pass/Fail rating scale for the 4th marking period.  We are using this methodology because this is an abbreviated marking period.  Students’ final grades will be determined using the average of the first three marking periods.

We will continue to serve meals each day at the High School Event Entrance from 11:00am – 12:30pm each Monday through Friday.  Please know that schools continue to remain closed except for essential personnel.

We are planning virtual graduations for Kindergarten and our High School Seniors.  A formal ceremony is also being planned for our High School Seniors, once we are permitted to re-open our building.  Weather permitting, the ceremony will be conducted either at the Football Field or in the High School Auditorium.  Building Principals will be sharing further information regarding these ceremonies in the near future.

We are all awaiting the time that we resume our normal operations, however, we must all do what the Governor has asked to mitigate the spread.  We will keep you updated on any changes to the current closure, when we receive that information.

We appreciate your efforts through this extraordinary time.  If you have any questions during this time, please feel free to reach out to your building principal or to me.  We will all get through this together.  Stay Safe.
