competition for 6th through 8th grade students and the Voice of Democracy contest for
9th through 12th graders.
In the Patriot’s Pen writing contest, eighth graders James Tweardy, Emma Burda,
and Audrianna Day placed in the contest writing on the theme “My Voice in America’s
Democracy.” Jimmy won first place, Emma second, and Audrianna third.
Ninth graders Jesse Sokira, Elizabeth Moyer, and Reese Hoffman placed in the
Voice of Democracy contest. This year’s Voice of Democracy writing theme is “Is
America Today Our Forefathers’ Vision.” Jesse placed first, Elizabeth second, and
Reese third in the senior high division. The essay winners in both divisions will go on to
the state VFW competition later this year.
Students and their parents were invited to the VFW for an awards reception. New
Florence Post commander Anthony Rivera spoke at the ceremony and commended

Please see information about our Science of Reading initiatives and ECRI (Enhanced Core Reading Instruction) instructional practices below:
What is ECRI?
“ECRI" stands for "Enhanced Core Reading Instruction," which is a multi-tiered reading instructional program designed to improve reading skills for ALL students in kindergarten, first, and second grade. ECRI is a structured approach to teaching foundational reading skills with a strong emphasis on explicit and systematic instruction, focusing on critical content like phonemic awareness, phonics, word recognition and fluency. You can find detailed information about ECRI in various research papers and PDFs available online, often linked to the Center on Teaching and Learning at the University of Oregon, where the program was developed. ECRI aligns with the Science of Reading and is an evidence-based practice in student literacy achievement that our educators use to support student literacy instruction.

Third graders in Mrs. Aimee Erwin’s class read Christmas stories to Mrs. Kayla Erwin’s kindergarten students to kick-off the holiday season. They all had fun sharing their holiday spirit and making new friends.

United Students volunteered at Toys For Tots in Altoona last week. Their assistance was very much appreciated and welcomed. Thank you Mr. Bevard and Mrs. Thompson for chaperoning.
